I grew up in the quint little fishing town of Deer River, MN, population 903.
When they say it takes a village to raise a childe, they were probably talking about a place like this.
Everyone knows everyone. And while everyone is often in your business, they will also give you the shirt off their back in a snowstorm.
The entire town does fundraisers if someone is in need or will bring you a hotdish when your dog passes.  It's just the kind of people they are.  And while I have leaned hard work and wholesome Midwest values, when I left home, I realized just how much I didn't know about the big crazy world.
I joined the Navy right after high school, which was an education in itself!  I've written down many stories that I have collected over the years in my book, "What They Don't Teach You in Deer River."
This blog is just an extension of the book, and the lessons I continue to learn on a daily basis.
And because I just can't make up my mind, I've since joined the USAF National Guard, where the stories continue to flow.
Because between the military and motherhood, there is never a dull moment.
